St Columba’s Church open days
Heritage Open Day: St Columba’s church will be open to view with a special display of historical information especially prepared for Heritage Open Days The Grade II* Listed church of St Columba is one of the later designs of the renowned ecclesiastical architect Temple Lushington Moore, designed in 1913 but not built until after WWI under the supervision of his son-in-law Leslie Moore. Placed diagonally on an awkwardly shaped and sloping site. The external appearance belies the effect on entering from the west which has been described in the recently revised Buildings of England volume as one of spaciousness and dignity. The footprint of the building is said to represent a dove.
There will be a digital display of the history of the church, including Moore’s original plans. On Saturday, 13 September, children will be able to create a work of art reflecting their impressions of the building.
Tea/coffee and cakes will be available on both days.
