Heritage Open Day: Dr Susan Barton will deliver a lecture on 'Family Fortunes: Braunstone, the Civil War and the Winstanleys', as featured in her new book. Join Dr Susan Barton as she explores how a momentous national event, the Civil War of 1642 to 1651, had a lasting local impact. The Royalist Hastings family had been Lords of the Manor since Medieval times but, as a consequence of their loyalty to King Charles I, their fortune was lost. Their estate at Braunstone was sold to James Winstanley, a Gray’s Inn lawyer from Lancashire in 1650. In 1776, James’ descendants commissioned Braunstone Hall where the Winstanleys lived until 1926.
