Heritage Open Day: An English Civil War Living history event. In 2025 the Heritage Open Days in the medieval and historic St Oswald's Church, Winwick, Warrington will be welcoming The Battle of Winwick Society.
On 19th August 1648, a decisive battle took place in the English Civil War at Winwick, known as the battle of Red Bank. Fought with muskets and pikes in the fields bordering Winwick and St Oswald's church.
This was a battle of national significance in the English Civil War and was one of two major battles which saw the final defeat of King Charles I and his supporters. Historic St Oswald's church stands in the battlefield and was used as a refuge and a prison for hundreds of Scottish troops fleeing the conflict.
