Heritage Open Day: Nestled in the conservation village of Walton, Near Warrington, Cheshire, St John’s church is a stunning example of Gothic architecture. All are welcome to come along and learn about the fascinating history of this beautiful building. This beautiful Victorian church was consecrated in May 1885 during a snow storm!
It was funded by Sir Gilbert Greenall a wealthy brewery owner. The family lived at Walton Hall, now owned by Warrington Borough Council. Sir Gilbert's son became the first Lord Daresbury and the Lord Daresburys continue as patrons of the church.
No expense was spared, the foremost architects of the day, Paley and Austin of Lancaster were employed, the contractor being R Fairhurst of Whitley.
