Heritage Open Day: St. Mary's is one of Surrey's oldest churches, built around 1030 AD by Thored, the Danish Thane of the Manor of Horsley. It has a nave of some 47 feet in length. Its architectural significance boast a fine Norman and Tudor arches. The building is constructed of chalk clunch, which is found in the locality. The size of the church is unusual for a small parish, suggesting that Thored was a generous patron. The patrons of St. Mary's over the centuries have been Lords of the Manor of West Horsley, owning the house and estate which now comprises West Horsley Place. They have contributed such architectural features as the Norman arches and north aisle, and the fine Tudor arches and south aisle.
