Heritage Open Day: This fine, unspoiled residence was built in 1860 for the Heelis family in the Victorian Gothic style. This year they are working with their neighbours at Kingstone House, which was an extension of the original Battlebarrow House. Beatrix Potter married solicitor William Heelis and stayed at Battlebarrow House annually for high days and holidays. JMW Turner visited Appleby in 1831 and sketched the view of the town from here. The house has other arts connections: home to George Stampa (cousin of Willy Heelis), renowned illustrator of Punch magazine; and contemporary illustrator Paul Leith. It is now the home of artists and curators Karen Babayan and Chris Taylor, and is filled with their eclectic collection of paintings and art.
