The Lion in Winter by James Goldman
Christmas, 1183. The Plantagenet family gather at Chinon Castle for the Yuletide season - but amidst the snow-capped turrets and the wafting smell of roast boar, the fate of England is being sealed.
This is the kingdom of Henry II and his queen, Eleanor of Aquitaine. Courageous, hardy, imperious – Henry is a mountain amongst men. Yet even the strongest must age, and in the waning days of his reign, his thoughts turn to succession.
For the warrior king, a choice between three sons: Richard, Geoffrey and John.
For these sons, the crown is indivisible. Where one leads, the others lose. Only one may sit upon the throne of England.
The halls are decked and the stage is set for a festive night of political intrigue, dark humour and an English titan’s desperate search for legacy.
This amateur production of “The Lion in Winter” is presented by arrangement with Concord Theatricals Ltd. on behalf of Samuel French Ltd. www.concordtheatricals.co.uk
