Hansard is both a powerful drama about a complex marriage and also a comedy about politics. Set in 1988. Robin is a junior minister in Margaret Thatcher’s new government; Diana has more left-wing views, which sets up witty banter and more deeply-felt arguments at both political and personal levels. Through sharp humour and raw emotion, Hansard examines politics, privilege, loss and, in the end, love, in a funny and barbed way. It was first performed at the National with Lindsay Duncan and Alex Jennings as the cast.
