Helix Ensemble in Countesthorpe

Helix Ensemble in Countesthorpe

Helix Ensemble is bringing a programme of wonderful orchestral music to St Andrew’s Church, Countesthorpe on Saturday 24th January 2026 at 7.30pm. Come and join us in this warm, welcoming church to celebrate the first concert of Active Arts 50th season.
Helix first performed in Countesthorpe in 2010, and we have enjoyed a long relationship with Active Arts that has seen increasing popularity of the concerts at St Andrews. We are very pleased to be part of Active Arts’ success at promoting the arts and live music.
Our Musical Director Andre Chan has chosen Mozart’s Overture to Cosi fan Tutte to open this concert; a short introduction to the light-hearted opera, hinting at the music to follow.
Hans Gál was a leading composer in Austria enjoying a wide reputation with orchestral and operatic repertoire before emigrating to the United Kingdom in 1938. The Divertimento for Small Orchestra Op 22b, written in 1924, is a lively, entertaining piece with five movements; an ideal introduction to his music for both Helix Ensemble and our audience in Countesthorpe.
Our final work is Mendelssohn’s Symphony No 1. It was his first orchestral symphony, full of energy, and composed in 1824 when he was just fifteen. He built on the traditions of the past but also absorbed ideas from his contemporaries, and his own distinctive musical voice comes through.
