Getting Crabs, Throwing Stones and Other Offences: 19th Century Trespa

A Nightwatchman’s Notebook: Milford in the 1830s
A notebook kept by the Milford nightwatchmen in the 1830s was handed over to the Belper Historical Society in 2022. Once transcribed, it revealed the identities of the people involved, the places that most often attracted trespassers, and the punishments given to offenders. This talk uses that remarkable document to present a fascinating and highly detailed picture of a lesser-known side of everyday local life.
