Tender-hearted adaptation of Sigrid Nunez’s 2018 bestseller about novelist and creative writing teacher Iris (Naomi Watts) who finds her comfortable, solitary New York life thrown into disarray after her closest friend and mentor Walter (Bill Murray) commits suicide and bequeaths her his beloved Great Dane, Apollo. The huge dog likened to a pony, is not a good boy at the outset creating practical problems – like furniture destruction and eviction notices – and in a superb canine screen performance, is obviously grieving for his past owner, unlike the bitter and resentful women dealing with Walter's suicide.
You’d have to have a hard heart not to be moved by Apollo’s droopy-eyed, grief-stricken stare, nor as Iris begins calling him “bud” and they become increasingly open and dependent on each other. This unexpected bonding allows Iris to come to terms with her own past, and her own creative inner life.
