Meadowhall is set to play a central role in this year’s Sheffield Lunar Chinese New Year Festival as the city celebrates the arrival of the Year of the Horse with a vibrant programme of cultural celebration, performances and family-friendly activities.
From Sunday 15th to Friday 20th February 2026, visitors can enjoy a week-long schedule of free drop-in workshops at Meadowhall, culminating in a special evening performance from the internationally acclaimed Foshan Lion Dance Troupe on Friday 20th February at 6.30pm in the Lower Oasis.
Throughout the week, guests can take part in hands-on cultural activities including Chinese calligraphy, lantern making and mask painting, delivered in partnership with the University of Sheffield Confucius Institute. Workshops run daily from 11am to 5pm in The Gallery and are suitable for all ages.
The celebrations will reach a high-energy finale on Friday evening as the Foshan Acrobatic Lion Dance team returns to Sheffield. Combining acrobatics, drumming and choreographed movement, the traditional lion dance is believed to ward off evil and bring good luck for the year ahead.
All Meadowhall festival activity will support Sheffield Children’s Hospital Charity, with fundraising taking place across the week.
Meadowhall’s programme forms part of the wider Sheffield Lunar Chinese New Year Festival 2026, which runs across the city from 16th to 25th February.
