A tale of strategy, courage and human fallibility, this talk 'The Destruction of Arctic Convoy PQ17' is given by Naval historian and former submariner, Andy Boyd.
On 4 July 1942, Arctic Convoy PQ17, crossing the Barents Sea with supplies for Russia, was ordered to scatter by the Admiralty. This decision led to huge merchant ship losses and is viewed as one of the most shameful episodes in Royal Navy history. 30 years later, it was subject to a famous libel trial.
With new evidence, Andy Boyd, author of 'Arms for Russia and the Naval War in the Arctic', takes a fresh look at how and why this disaster happened, and its consequences.
