On 4 July 1942, Arctic Convoy PQ17, crossing the Barents Sea with supplies for Russia, was ordered to scatter by the Admiralty. This decision led to huge merchant ship losses and is viewed as one of the most shameful episodes in Royal Navy history. 30 years later, it was subject to a famous libel trial.
