Sheffield Skeptics in the Pub

Sheffield Skeptics in the Pub was founded in December 2009 and is a good way for people from all walks of life to hear from experts and discuss with them important issues that affect us all, while enjoying their favourite beverage. Meetings are held every third Monday of the month at Farm Road Sports & Social Club, Farm Road, Sheffield S2 2TP from 7.30 pm. There is no need to book and no entrance fee, but a voluntary donation of £3 is welcome to cover speaker's expenses and room hire. Parking is free if you type in your registration number on the tablet at the bar.

Our April 2026 meeting is hosted by Sheffield Humanists. The speaker, John Hull, will present a talk titled ‘Joseph Priestly - Yorkshireman, Freethinker, Radical and Scientist’. Discover the remarkable life and legacy of Joseph Priestley (1733-1804) - chemist and radical Unitarian freethinker. This engaging talk will trace Priestley's journey from his Yorkshire roots to his influential roles in science, education, religious thought, and political reform. As a true polymath, Priestley's story is one of intellectual curiosity, dissent, and a relentless pursuit of reason. We will explore Priestley's ground-breaking scientific achievements, including his discovery of oxygen and his practical innovations like carbonated water. We will also delve into his radical religious views, but also his advocacy for rational dissent, and his attempts to align and update his Christian beliefs based on new scientific discoveries.

Dr John Hull has had a distinguished career in education. He began as a history teacher and has maintained his passion for the subject, now sharing talks on overlooked figures and events. John held headteacher roles at three secondary schools in Sheffield and Bradford, contributed to Sheffield's School Improvement team, and worked on national initiatives to support challenged schools,
