With a script by Grahame Greene and direction by Carol Reed, this is a terrific thriller in which Holly Martins (Joseph Cotten) – an American writer of cowboy stories – comes to Vienna to visit his old pal Harry Lime, only to be told he has died - or has he? Orson Welles lurking in the sewers and Anton Karas’ haunting zither theme make for a suitably sinister atmosphere - perhaps appropriate for a Halloween show. (UK 1949)
