The title of our July 2026 talk and discussion is 'How Ultra-Processed Foods Came to Dominate Our Diet' and our speaker is Dr Domenica Melinda Urzi.
'Ultra-processed foods (UPFs) now account for more than half of the calories consumed in the United Kingdom, yet debate continues about what they are, whether they are harmful, and how much concern they deserve. Is the issue simply excess sugar, fat and salt, or is there something fundamentally different about foods that are industrially formulated and engineered for convenience, shelf life and hyper-palatability?
'Rather than advocating a particular ideology or diet, this presentation invites a sceptical examination of the available evidence and asks what it means for individuals, families and policymakers seeking to make informed decisions about food in the twenty-first century.'
Dr Urzi is a sociologist and social policy researcher, educator, and author of The Ultra-Processed Free Family Guide and Cookbook. She completed her PhD at the University of Nottingham, where her research explored food systems, intensive agriculture, migrant labour and the social consequences of modern food production.
