St Mary the Virgin, Brighstone, Isle of Wight
Heritage Open Day: Grade 1 Listed Church St Mary the Virgin, Brighstone, is a medieval Church of England parish church on Main Road in the historic village of Brighstone, Isle of Wight. The church is Grade I listed and has been a place of worship for more than 900 years, with origins usually dated to around 1190. Its notable surviving medieval features include four Norman arches, a late-12th-century north nave arcade, a 13th-century west doorway, a 14th-century piscina and a 15th-century hexagonal font. The west end of the church, including the base of the tower, was built in the 14th and 15th centuries using locally quarried Island stone, while the present spire dates from 1720. The interior also includes a Jacobean pulpit, stained glass, historic memorials and roof timbers traditionally believed to have come from a shipwreck.
