Heritage Open Day: Quakers have been meeting in Leiston since the 1670s, and the present Meeting House was built in 1860. This fascinating building, with a burial ground behind, will see storyteller Justine de Mierre bringing the history of Quakers in Suffolk to life. Leiston Quaker Meeting House, built in 1860, stands on a site once known as Jordans, puchased in 1713 by local Quakers wanting to build a Meeting House. Two cottages were also built on the eastern side, next to the road. By 1857 the buildings were in such a poor state of repair, that Gundy Neave, a Leiston shopkeeper and Quaker worked out that it would be cheaper to build a new Meeting House, than continue to repair the old one.
