Heritage Open Day: Wardsend Cemetery: Sheffield’s Working Heritage
Open Morning and Tour at Wardsend Cemetery Heritage Park
10.00am -1.00pm
Tour 11.00 - 12.00 Situated on a hillside overlooking the River Don, Wardsend Cemetery opened in 1857 as an overspill burial ground for St. Philip’s Church. It is the last resting place of predominantly working-class people from the local and wider area, many of their occupations reflecting the growth of Sheffield’s world-renowned steel industry, and the tool and cutlery trades with long hours in harsh conditions, often leading to ill health and early death. Buried here too are pub landlords, shop keepers, farm labourers, servants, colliery workers, photographers, entertainers and military personnel from nearby Hillsborough Barracks.
