Comprising of an open trading area at street level with the main hall above. This early building, which was severally damaged during the Civil War when gunpowder ignited in a store room, was totally replaced by the present structure in the mid 18th Century.
The street level was initially retained as a trading area, but later was enclosed and glazed to create the lower chambers that are seen today.
A devastating fire in 1947 badly damaged the structure, but following careful restoration and conservation works, the building was fully restored by the following year.
