Historical Overview of Unity House
Heritage Open Day: Historical documents will be available tracing Unity House's history from its inception as a medical aid centre in 1889, its use as a British restaurant in the war, and its current use after being purchased by Mont Follick MP in 1945. The Unity House open day aims to celebrate the working-class heritage of 21 Fennel Street, Loughborough. The building was built in 1889 by Friendly Societies who formed a Medical Aid Association.
The organisers were working people who wanted to provide medical cover through a co-operative principle. In 1945 it was bought by the local MP, Dr Mont Follick and was the meeting place for all local trade unions during the 1950s and 1960s beside serving as the headquarters of Loughborough Labour Party.
