At Hospitalfield in Arbroath the artist Patrick Allan-Fraser (1813–1890) remodelled a 13th century hospital to create his 19th century Arts & Crafts home. The walled gardens have been cultivated from the early medieval period, from the medicinal and the orchard to the Victorian passion for collecting ferns.
