We've discovered some of the secrets hidden beneath the surface of our town. But have we learned them all? Cellars have a long history as space where the temperature is low: suitable for keeping beer, wine or ice. As a roomy space: suitable for storing coal, or bulky household items. As a space that is separate from everyday life: suitable use for a music venue, a dungeon or for wild animals. As a safe space: where people could shelter from bombs, or keep their valuables safe from fire. When we explored a sample of cellars in the centre of Alnwick we heard stories of bears, bars, kitchens, and a popular music venue. But did we learn all there is to know?
