Heritage Open Day: Stories of Alnwick cellars speak of bears and beer, tunnels and night clubs. We've discovered some of the secrets hidden beneath the surface of our town. But have we learned them all? Cellars have a long history as space where the temperature is low: suitable for keeping beer, wine or ice. As a roomy space: suitable for storing coal, or bulky household items. As a space that is separate from everyday life: suitable use for a music venue, a dungeon or for wild animals. As a safe space: where people could shelter from bombs, or keep their valuables safe from fire.
When we explored a sample of cellars in the centre of Alnwick we heard stories of bears, bars, kitchens, and a popular music venue. But did we learn all there is to know? Can you help us to delve more deeply into the secrets that lie beneath the centre of our town?
