Suffolk Family History Society, Ipswich Group Meeting

The next Meeting is at The Main Hall, The Salvation Army Citadel, 558 Woodbridge Road, Ipswich IP4 4PH, at 7:30pm, on Wednesday 2nd July
It is all about Admiral Philip DeVere Broke……He could be described as a Local Hero, as he eventually lived in a fine house near Levington, not far from the River Orwell. He is remembered locally with a housing Estate (Broke Hall) named after him, as is a swimming pool at the School on the Orwell he attended.
So – what is the fuss all about
He had a distinguished Naval career in the days of sail. My understand is that while Captain of The Shannon, he had a sea battle, during the American War of Independence – capturing the rebel ship “The Chesapeake” … all the crew of his warship probably ended up sharing the Prize Money.
There is a lot more to this story – so come along and listen to a fascinating talk, presented by Cathy Shelbourne.
