Christ Church United Reformed Baptist Church

Heritage Open Day: Opened in January 1858, Christ Church was built in the grand Gothic Revival style and designed by Ipswich architect Frederick Barnes. It is built of Kentish Rag with Caen stone quoins and originally had two spires. The pulpit is much older than the church as it was transferred to the present Christ Church from the 1720 Meeting House. Work to build the current Church building was completed in just eight months.

Originally two spires topped the turrets flanking the main entrance, but were removed in the 1960 ’s when they were considered to be unsafe.

A striking feature of the building is the large rose window over the main entrance, its delicate tracery filled with coloured glass. The large organ inside is one of the finest in the Ipswich area.

One of the church members Mike Smith has written a book about the history of Christ Church, which can be purchased from the church.
