A Twist in the Tale – Belper’s Ropemakers

Step back in time and uncover the fascinating story of rope – once an everyday essential at home and at work. On this guided walking tour, you’ll explore how and where rope was made in Belper, and meet the Kirkland family, who for five generations worked the ropewalk owned by the Strutts. From their base on Bridge Street, the Kirklands built a thriving business and became an important part of the town’s community.
This gentle 90-minute walk is perfect for those with limited mobility. With a rest stop along the way, you’ll have plenty of time to enjoy the journey. The tour ends with refreshments, where you’ll hear the final chapter of this remarkable story.
