Tomás Luis de Victoria's Rome
The renowned Spanish composer Tomás Luis de Victoria spent over two decades in Rome in the late 16th century. He took keen inspiration from the contemporary musical styles, admiring the early madrigals by Orlando di Lasso and Jacques Arcadelt as well as the more complex and chromatic compositions by Luca Marenzio. He also learnt from Renaissance master Giovanni da Palestrina. In return, later composers who visited Rome or lived there, such as Philippe de Monte and Giovanni Anerio, were inspired
