Les Combattants (‘Love at First Fight’) (2014)
A film by Thomas Cailley.
This a romantic comedy with a twist. Arnaud is a young woodcutter, working in the family business building garden shelters, but also coming to terms with the death of his father.
He meets Madeleine, a bluntly spoken survival fanatic, who wants to join the military. He enlists in boot camp to be close to her.
The film makes some sardonic points about unemployment and disillusionment among French youth, but it is mainly about the relationship between the slightly hapless Arnaud and the brusque Madeleine. He expects nothing, she prepares for the worst.
All in all, an intelligent, insightful and charming coming of age story.
The film stars Adèle Haenel and Kévin Azaïs, and won numerous awards at Cannes and in the César Awards, among others.
Duration 94 minutes, in French with English subtitles.
BBFC classification 15 (some strong language and moderate sex).
