In late eighteenth century Brittany, a painter (Marianne) is commissioned to paint the wedding portrait of the sheltered but headstrong daughter (Héloise) of an affluent countess.
While posing as her hired companion, Marianne is instructed to complete the work in secret, and the painter and subject become ever closer. A brief, forbidden affair takes place but ends in heartbreaking separation.
An exquisitely shot piece with themes of love, art, music and women’s place in society, the film received multiple five star reviews around the world, including from Time Out, The List, The Independent, Metro and The Guardian. It has become recognised as a modern masterpiece.
The film stars Noémie Merlant and Adèle Haenel, with Luana Bajrami and Valeria Golino.
