Cyrano de Bergerac (1990)
A film by Jean-Paul Rappeneau.
Despite Gérard Depardieu’s recent troubles over allegations of inappropriate behaviour, he remains a giant of French cinema, and this film is widely recognised as a masterpiece. It is one of the most successful French films ever made, and came 43 in a 2010 poll of the best films in world cinema.
Cyrano is a legendary swordsman and wordsmith but he is tormented by his physical appearance (an oversized nose!) which prevents him from declaring his love for the beautiful Roxane. Then a rival suitor appears………….
The film won 5 Oscars including best foreign language film and best actor, and 8 BAFTAs including the same two categories, with many other accolades around the world.
The subtitles used are from Anthony Burgess’ translation of the original text (an 1897 play by Edmond Rostand), and are mainly in rhyming couplets, a triumph in themselves.
The film stars Gérard Depardieu, Anne Brochet, Vincent Perez, Jacques Weber, Roland Bertin, Philippe Morier-Genoud, Pierre Maguelon and Sandrine Kiberlain among many others.
Duration 138 minutes, in French with English subtitles.
BBFC classification U (suitable for all).
